Our History

Our History

The history of Kinney Pike started in 1904, when the Steven C. Dorsey Agency formed to sell industrial life insurance policies.  The Pike Insurance Agency operated separately at the time nearby, selling industrial health and accident insurance as well as business property & casualty insurance.  Over the next several decades, the business names changed, the companies expanded and in 1969, the merged agencies formed Vermont’s largest independent property & casualty insurance agency, knows as Kinney, Pike, Bell & Conner.

Kinney, Pike, Bell & Conner continued to expand and strengthen their competencies by employing professionals dedicated to helping clients obtain insurance coverage with reputable companies at reasonable prices.

In 1976, Kinney, Pike, Bell & Conner hit another milestone in its history and was invited to become a partner in Assurex Global, a prestigious international consortium of top brokers worldwide.

In 1995, Kinney Pike was selected as a “Best Practices Agency” by ranking among the top performers nationally in the Best Practices Study conducted by the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA) and Reagan Consulting.  This 3-year esteemed honor recognizes insurance industry leaders in their revenue groups on the basis of client retention and services, employee productivity, financial results and overall management achievement.  Kinney Pike has periodically maintained this premier status as Vermont’s only Best Practices Agency, again being recognized with this honor in 2014.

In 1998, Kinney, Pike, Bell & Conner acquired Rathbone & Company, a preeminent employee benefits advisory firm specializing in the placement of group health, dental, life, and disability insurance. This broadened Kinney Pike’s suite of products, now offering extensive business services beyond traditional group benefits through their Employee Benefits Division.

Kevin Tibbits acquired ownership and took over as President in 2000, changing the name to Kinney Pike Insurance, Inc.  A Vermont native, Kevin began his insurance career in 1979 and joined Kinney Pike in 1985 as branch manager in the Hartford office.

In December 2009, Kinney Pike was acquired by Senior Officers Peter Werner, Justin Barwood and Doug Corman.  With their lengthy tenure in leadership roles with the Company, the three Principals are leading the company’s growth, fostering its strong community roots and championing its exceptional commitment to its clients and employees.

In 2012, Kinney Pike merged with The Allen Agency of Williston and The Roy Insurance Agency of Swanton. In 2017, Kinney Pike acquired a small agency in St. Johnsbury — The Caledonia Agency, and in 2018, Kinney Pike merged with another small agency, The Parker Agency of White River Junction. Kinney Pike now serves the personal, business, and employee benefits insurance needs of its clients throughout the Northeast through their six offices – Rutland, White River Junction, Williston, St. Johnsbury, Randolph, and Swanton.
